How much coffee is in a 5 lb bag
A 5 lb bag holds about 2,268 grams of coffee. We brew at 1 gram of coffee to 16 grams of water. One 8 oz cup then uses about 15 grams. One 5 lb bag makes about 150 cups. A 2 lb bag makes about 60 cups.
How many bags your office needs
Use this formula.
- Count the people who drink coffee at work.
- Multiply by the cups each person drinks at work in a day.
- Multiply by the days your office is open each week.
- Multiply by 4.3 weeks in a month.
- Divide by 150 cups per bag.
This table assumes 2 cups per person per day and 5 days a week.

Add about 10 percent for guests and busy weeks. If your team drinks 4 cups a day, double the bag count.
What it costs
Coffee only, one 5 lb bag costs about 64 to 73 cents per cup for the coffees below. The price per cup does not include the brewer, filters, cups, milk or sugar. Prices are from October 2026 and can change.

Do not buy more than you finish
Many roasters say to use opened whole bean coffee within about two to four weeks. Buy the number of bags your team finishes in four weeks or less.
A team of 10 drinkers finishes one 5 lb bag in about 1.5 weeks. That is a good fit. A team of 3 drinkers needs about 5 weeks for one 5 lb bag. That is too slow. A 2 lb bag lasts a team of 3 about 2 weeks, so it is the better fit.
How to keep a 5 lb bag fresh
- Keep the bag sealed until you need it.
- Store it away from heat, light and moisture.
- Move one week of coffee into an airtight container for the break room.
- Roll the main bag closed and keep it in a cupboard.
Whole bean stays fresh longer than ground coffee. If your office has a grinder, buy whole bean. If it does not, pick the grind that matches your brewer. Many 5 lb listings offer several grind sizes.
